Uno Machine wins the $5,000 G3 GLQHA Michigan Paint Futurity

Uno Machine won the G3 GLQHA Paint Futurity by a length and a half on June 20, finishing the 350-yard race with a time of 18.35 seconds. Uno Machine is a 2-year-old sorrel solid Paint-bred filly by Dos Poruno and out of Magical Dreams, by Raise A Jet. The filly is owned by Dave and Shirley Gates of Blanchard, Michigan. She has a two for two record, and has earned a total of $3,800 with a speed index of 82. A family affair, Dave and Shirley Gates are also the breeders of Uno Machine with son David training the filly and son Lee as the jockey.

 Second across the wire was Shake It Twice, a 2-year-old sorrel tobiano gelding by Judys Lineage and out of Shake Em Lady Jane, by Royal Shakem AQHA. She is owned and bred by R & R Racing Stable, LLC, of Prescott, Michigan. He is trained by Nate Funnell and ridden by Jose Beltran. He finished the race with a time of 18.57 seconds and earned $1,250 to make his lifetime earnings $1,510.

Finishing third was the black solid Paint-bred gelding, Awesome Voodo Magic. He ran the race in 18.90 seconds earning $750 to make his lifetime earnings $1,400. He is owned and bred by David and Tammy Lewis of Rockford, Michigan. Anthony Cunningham is the trainer and Juan Delgado was the jockey.

Other horses completing the race, along with times, include Sundays Sermon (19.42 seconds), and Petergunrabbit (19.50 seconds).

Horse racing has long been one of America’s favorite spectator sports. With the recent growth of the Paint Horse breed, it’s no wonder that Paints have become one of the hottest tickets in the horse racing industry.

Since 1966, when APHA officially recognized the sport, Paint racing has made major strides forward. In that inaugural year, 17 starters ran for $1,290 in just two states—Texas and Oklahoma. In 2009, more than 540 starters competed in more than 530 APHA-recognized races for record purses totaling more than $4.7 million.

A total of 17 states now feature Paint racing, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Paint Horses also race in Canada.

"Paint Racing enthusiasts recognized the amount of purse money available and have jumped in to take advantage of the lucrative payouts."
