Effects Of Magic takes the win at the Western Montana Fair Derby

FORT WORTH, TEXAS — Effects Of Magic, a 3-year-old bay solid Paint-bred mare, won the Western Montana Fair Derby, a 300-yard race, held Aug. 13 at Western Montana Fairgrounds in Missoula, Mont. The mare is owned by Nancy Garoutte of Wolf Point, Mont., trained by Jesse Villegas and was ridden by Antonio Perez.

“I was really surprised when she got a 100 speed index, but I knew she was ready to run,” said Garoutte.

Effects Of Magic outraced the second-place horse by one and a quarter
lengths with a time of 15.49 seconds. The mare, sired by Suchanimage and out of Magic Stuff AQHA, earned $2,805 for this win, increasing her lifetime earnings to $21,939.62.

“It was great to have her win and renew the fact that she could do it since she has been off for a while,” said Garoutte.

Raves Beauty, a bay tobiano mare sired by Texas Hero and out of Rave
Reviews AQHA, came in second with a time of 15.67 seconds. She is
owned by Robert Joscelyn and Betty Uphaus of Glasgow, Mont., trained
by Cheryl Uphaus and was ridden by Fernando Gamez.

BXT Castle Valley PTA, a sorrel solid Paint-bred gelding, posted a time of 15.79 for third place. The gelding is sired by Noble Chief and out of Im Too Special AQHA. He is owned and trained by Leonard and Rada Rogers of Cleveland, Utah, and was ridden by Terrance Birdrattler.

Crafty Cochise, Ironica Too and Judys Polecat completed the field.

More about Paint Horse racing

Horse racing has long been one of America’s favorite spectator sports. With the recent growth of the Paint Horse breed, it’s no wonder that Paints have become one of the hottest tickets in the horse racing industry.

Since 1966, when APHA officially recognized the sport, Paint racing has made major strides forward. In that inaugural year, 17 starters ran for $1,290 in just two states—Texas and Oklahoma. In 2005, more than 600 starters competed in more than 800 APHA-recognized races for purses totaling more than $5.1 million.

A total of 18 states now feature Paint racing, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Paint Horses also race in Canada.

“The future is really bright for Paint racing,” said Lex Smurthwaite, APHA’s executive director. “Owners from other racing breeds are getting involved with Paints because of the strong and steady growth of our program. It is still relatively easy to get involved and be competitive.”
