FORT WORTH, TEXAS—Reaching the $3 million sire mark is a rare accomplishment in just about every equine discipline; however Paint racing has seen two stand-out sires surpass this feat within the last four months. Judys Lineage recently joined Texas Hero to become the second $3 million sire in Paint racing history.
Nineteen-year-old Judys Lineage has been a force to be reckoned with since his first year on the track. In only two years as a racehorse, the sorrel tobiano Paint stallion ran in 15 races, earning 9 victories and $45,448 in earnings. At the end of his 3-year-old, and last, race season, Judys Lineage was aptly named 1992 Champion Running 3-Year-Old and Champion Running 3-Year-Old Colt.
After a successful run on the track, the stallion headed to the breeding shed where he sired 18 foals during his first foal crop in 1994. Since that initial breeding season he has sired 773 foals, 328 of which have performance records both on the track and in the arena. The newest $3 million sire has sired three Paints—Bust N Moves, Judys Cash and My Name Is Joe—that have each earned more than $100,000 on the track and been named APHA Running Champions. However, his siring ability doesn’t end there Judys Lineage also sired Hot Brew, the 2002 Open Jumping World Champion, and Classic Lineage, the 2003 Open Barrel Racing World Champion.
Judys Lineage, sired by Special Lineage TB and out of Judys Chick, earned his place in Paint racing history long before he became a $3 million sire. His accomplishments include:
- Number Two on both the Lifetime and 2007 Leading Sires list;
- Number Four on the Lifetime Leading Broodmares Sire list;
- Number One on the 2007 Leading Broodmares Sire list;
- Leading sire of Lifetime ROM and Superior earners.
Paint racing’s newest $3 million sire is owned by father and son Henry and Chuck Bowlan, respectively, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma.
More about Paint Horse racing
Horse racing has long been one of America’s favorite spectator sports. With the recent growth of the Paint Horse breed, it’s no wonder that Paints have become one of the hottest tickets in the horse racing industry.
Since 1966, when APHA officially recognized the sport, Paint racing has made major strides forward. In that inaugural year, 17 starters ran for $1,290 in just two states—Texas and Oklahoma. In 2007, more than 600 starters competed in more than 700 APHA-recognized races for record purses totaling more than $5 million.
A total of 18 states now feature Paint racing, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Paint Horses also race in Canada.
“Paint Racing continues to be an opportunity for breeders, owners and trainers to take a serious look at,” said APHA Executive Director Lex Smurthwaite. “The amount of purse money available and the average earning per Paint starter is creating new interest in the Paint racing industry.”
