Carter breaks personal record as he leads Flash N B Gone to win the Graham Paint Futurity

FORT WORTH, TEXAS—Make No Shadows showed an impressive effort, but lost by a neck to Flash N B Gone at the Graham Paint Futurity on May 31 at Remington Park racetrack in Oklahoma City. The 350-yard race offered $190,480.

Flash N B Gone, sired by Royal Quick Flash and out of All I Can Be, posted a time of 18.15 seconds. The 2-year-old sorrel Solid Paint-Bred gelding, owned by Desiree Buck of Ringling, Okla. and trained by David Drake, earned $72,387 to increase the gelding’s lifetime earnings to $93,407.

With a rough start just outside the gate, the gelding broke sixth at the beginning of the race. As jockey G.R. Carter, Jr., recovered, he maintained a straight, powerful pace to snatch the win of the richest futurity for Paints and Appaloosas at Remington Park. Carter, one of the top APHA and AQHA jockeys, broke his own previously-set seasonal record of 93 wins at the track after earning 96 victories this year aboard both Paint and Quarter Horses.

Make No Shadows, owned by Charles Trochta of Oklahoma City and Sammy Hester of Tulsa, Okla., took the second-place finish by a nose. Bred and trained by Hester, the 2-year-old chestnut Solid Paint-Bred filly posted a time of 18.20 seconds. Make No Shadows was ridden by Larry Payne to earn $32,381 during the race, increasing his lifetime earnings to $37,748. The gelding was sired by Oak Tree Special AQHA and out of Treasured Chick.

Earning the third-place finish was the 2-year-old gray Solid Paint-Bred gelding Speed Bandit. Sired by Judys Lineage and out of Rocket Memories AQHA, the gelding posted a time of 18.20 seconds while earning $20,952 for career earnings of $70,740. Speed Bandit is owned and was bred by Tom Denham of Glenpool, Okla., was trained by Dee Keener and ridden by Kenny Muntz.

Other horses completing the race include Panther Pride (18.22 seconds), Trochtas Okey (18.40 seconds), Awesome Judy (18.49 seconds), Fawns Rose ApHC (18.51 seconds), TH Agouti (18.71 seconds) and JudyLongLeggs (18.75 seconds).

Horse racing has long been one of America’s favorite spectator sports. With the recent growth of the Paint Horse breed, it’s no wonder that Paints have become one of the hottest tickets in the horse racing industry.

Since 1966, when APHA officially recognized the sport, Paint racing has made major strides forward. In that inaugural year, 17 starters ran for $1,290 in just two states—Texas and Oklahoma. In 2007, more than 600 starters competed in more than 700 APHA-recognized races for record purses totaling more than $5 million.

A total of 18 states now feature Paint racing, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Paint Horses also race in Canada.

“Paint Racing continues to be an opportunity for breeders, owners and trainers to take a serious look at,” said APHA Executive Director Lex Smurthwaite. “The amount of purse money available and the average earning per Paint starter is creating new interest in the Paint racing industry.”
